I avoided reading anything on Kanon when it was airing. Pretty much, I thought Kanon would be a solid tear-jerker like Air, something that had a light hearted bit thrown in here and there to provide contrast, but really just wanted to make your eyes water. So far after eight episodes, Kanon has had me laughing a lot, very much more than I thought I would be. Yuichi, the male in this harem, is one funny SOB. I actually like the guy, which is an odd feeling for a harem show.

Aquarion, LOL

March 23rd, 2008

aquarion.jpgI can see why Funimation chose Aquarion to test the season box-set release instead of releasing it the traditional one volume at a time. Aquarion has names behind it that anime fans in the US recognize like Shoji Kawamori and Yoko Kanno, so Funimation can market the show. Who doesn’t like Yoko Kanno?

Though after watching the first volume, it’s pretty easy to see why Aquarion was chosen as a season-set guinea pig. The first five episodes are quite lame. I know I probably would not have bought volume two after seeing volume one.

Sure, most mecha shows are either super cheesy or are trying their hardest to prove mecha can be a serious business. Aquarion straddles the line quite deliberately in equal parts that it comes off as trying too hard without a clue. Eventually it sorts it self out enough to dump some interesting ideas about some shadow angel bad guys who harvest humans as food and that there are reincarnated heroes who are able to fight them.

Comic Party Revolution

January 22nd, 2008

Picked up the Comic Party Revolution thinpak collection. I originally watched Revolution through Netflix. It’s not great anime and probably not even mediocre anime, but it’s the kind of show I can easily put in the DVD player and watch again while doing other things like alphabetizing my CDs and breaking down those Hobby Search boxes for the trash. Plus, Taishi cracks me up all the time, so I grabbed it and watched it again over the weekend.

Ending Haruhi in the Rain

December 18th, 2007

Hype is a giant killer. The more furious the proclamations of greatness the more likely the legend will be dead on arrival. A few days ago I finished The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, its battered and bloody, but it survived hype’s special attack and was a fun show for me to watch.

My-Otome, The Beach, Denied

November 15th, 2007

I’ve been so busy lately that I actually have a backlog of everything, not just anime, but my other loser activities as well. Times like these I go for funny and junky stuff like My-Otome, that admittedly, is not quite as good as taco rice (an Epic Win), which is actually healthy while still being junky, and that’s enough to rank taco rice higher than My-Otome, a show that probably isn’t healthy at all. Still, I think I’ll take My-Otome every time, no matter how much trans fat it may have.

Poor cheeky monkey. Far away, yet so close.
