Twelve Days of Anime, Post 6: Eight Was Great

By super rats on December 19, 2010

Maybe the Endless Eight section of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Season 2 works better as a condensed viewing experience, eight episodes in two sittings, as opposed to waiting two months, one episode a week, because I thought it was an interesting watch, which is far from the reaction that the people who were watching it had during the weekly broadcast in 2009. Seeing how things changed from one episode to another was fun to see and I respect the risk involved in the attempt, even if in the end it probably damaged the popularity of the series. It was a bit bloated and maybe would have been better served as Four Forever or something (just be glad it wasn’t Forever 21), but at the same time feel like something would disappear without the bloat of eight episodes. I totally understand why many people don’t feel that way, though.

Twelve Days of Anime, Post 5: Section23 Dubs Anime

By super rats on December 18, 2010

Five years ago, anime releases in North America without an English dub were anomalies reserved for a Satoshi Kon film or two. Until this year, it was starting to appear that the anomaly would become the matter of course for anime released in North America. Fewer people buy anime these days and selling a number of units to recoup dubbing costs is more difficult. Selling fewer copies makes sense if it means reducing costs enough to turn a profit. This would seriously reduce the number of anime I’d watch any given year. I enjoy watching anime dubbed into English, or at least having that option when I’m paying for a disc. I don’t normally watch anime subtitled and sometimes just won’t. Not everything is as compelling as a Satoshi Kon anime or where specific dialog isn’t all that important like with Strike Witches, where you can understand what’s going on without knowing what’s being said much of the time, or something like Escaflowne where the English dub is ruinous.

Twelve Days of Anime, Post 4: To The Poles

By super rats on December 17, 2010

This chic has lots of sex and she’s the initiator of the deeds. In the context of anime and their squeaky clean perfect virgin main characters, this angel blew me away.

Not to get carried away, since Panty is more a characature than a character, and in an odd way feels more fleshed out than a lot of properly fleshed out characters since many fleshed out characters are just check-lists of recycled traits and back-story elements if you want to take the cynical jadesville view of things, which for this sentence I am going to draw cards from the jadesville deck, but Panty is so different from what we almost always get, that when we break from the homogeneity of female lead characters it feels like an event.

Twelve Days of Anime, Post 3: Watched Clannad

By super rats on December 16, 2010

Watching Clannad makes me wish I wasn’t such an ass in high school. For me, that’s where the fantasy in Clannad lies, not the cute girls. I really don’t have this urge to protect or rape the girls of Clannad as the prevailing Pavlovian “tastes great!” vs. “less filling!” response mechanism regarding moe goes on twitter. One appealing wish in the show is how rewarding it can be to help somebody, that the person will accept the help. They might make you weed their entire lawn first, but they’ll take the help you offer. The girls in the show just make it easier to believe that some dude would go through all that trouble. There’s just no way I’d buy it if Tomoya took it upon himself to break his back clearing the weeds from around Kotomi’s house if Kotomi was a dude on the basketball team. In real life, helping people is a bit more complicated, requiring something of a spine, will power, determination, taking more than a thought to count.

Twelve Days of Anime, Post 2: Holiday for a Witch

By super rats on December 15, 2010

I’m not much of a classic Hollywood fan, but I am one of the many who has a spot for Audrey Hepburn. So in “My Romagna,” episode 5 of Strike Witches season two…as soon as Lucchini lands her kick and grabs the hand of the girl she “rescues” a grin spread across my face, because I knew where this was going, or at least at that moment thinking to myself they aren’t going to, oh yes they are!

Twelve Days of Anime, Post 1: Streaming Anime

By super rats on December 14, 2010

For over a decade, I’d always thought it would be nice to be able to watch anime as it was being released like “normal” TV. I don’t do fansubs, so when streaming gained mass and momentum, I no longer had to wait 2-years to watch the anime I’d hear people talking about. I was looking forward to being current and being swept up with fandom (like 12 Days).

The BRS: Experimental Jet Set Trash and No Star

By super rats on November 29, 2010

BRS-07

I still totally dig the Black Rock Shooter. To me she’s a style and a design. Because that’s sort of what she was. Because I’ve chosen not to learn more about her. The bliss of ignorance. Knowing isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. Stuff in your head sometimes trump the facts, especially when it’s something that’s just for fun. I’m a little wary, or more like wondering should I bother, about learning more about a character design that’s captivated my imagination. Maybe if there was universal praise for the BRS OVA, I’d find a way to see it. The mixed signals I’m getting tells me to enjoy the mystery and fantasy of this stylish chic with a big fucking gun blasting through the bleak corridors strewn with rubble and chains of my imagination. Do I need anything more from her than that?
