My-Otome, Finished

Posted on August 29, 2008 by super rats in Anime

Finally got around to finishing My-Otome. I loved it. Pretty cheesy, definitely ridiculous, nudge-nudge-wink-wink, some fighting, dunt-dun-dunnn! plot twists and cute girls. I love my junk too much sometimes. Sunrise done good with My-Otome.

One of the points of interest is that most of the secondary characters in My-Otome sort of come from another show, My-HiME. My-Otome takes place in a different universe, so they aren’t exactly the same characters, even if they keep a lot of the characteristics and have the same personalities between the two shows.

Is this a cheap way to save on character design costs or a neat gimmick? I thought it was a neat gimmick, besides the characters have new wardrobes, so they still have to be designed anyway — besides, I find the character designs attractive so I won’t complain. The gimmick brought a certain amount of anticipation each episode wondering how those familiar characters get inserted into the story, while also getting to know the new main character, Arika Yumemiya, an annoyingly positive type lead.

The gimmick added something to the experience, but hardly needed to enjoy. The dude who has been living on my couch since April is actually getting the gimmick in reverse, since he’s watched Otome before HiME. Besides, it’s not like one is required to enjoy the other anyway.

As far as the Sunrise Trainwreck ending goes. The battle scenes were cool, but too short in a way. There’s so many characters in My-Otome that some of the side characters only get three seconds to show-off their cool battle moves — poor Mai, used so sparingly, when she’s so awesome. On the other hand, wanting more is better than wanting less.

I could definitely stand another series in this franchise. Also, the number of good figures for this franchise is way too freaking low. Sadness.

    I didn’t like Otome a lot :’(

I prefer by far Hime (but not the ending)

But that’s just my opinion , glad to see you enjoyed it ^^

I like HiME better as well, but mainly because Mai is one of my favorite characters.

What about Otome put you off? The characters, the storyline, or something else?

I think it was the story , Hime was more ‘tragic” and the second part had a dark feeling , it was awesome . Otome is , i think , more “bright” and more fun . And it had less good fight and less good songs .

But it’s only my opinion ^^

Story wise, I agree with James that My Hime is better and I like the idea of Battle Royale between all the HiMes and losing their precious persons. I think there are more battle scenes in my HiMe in compare to my Otome too.

Character wise, <3 Arika just because she is an incredibly positive character ^^

Weapon wise,my Otome is better and how they transform ^^ compare to myHIme

Basically I like them both lol and they are one of the few anime that I watched more than one.

Btw, You should try Mai Otome Zwei and Mai Otome 0.S.Ifr

Yeah, I totally dig the transform sequences in Otome. It really helped pump up the magical girl element.

I liked Otome over Hime. I thought the relationship between Tate and Mai was weak. Many ppl thought it was tragic but I didn’t feel it. While the action was good in Hime, the storyline didin’t hit me.
As for Otome, the character transformation was a plus but their plot was good. I felt the energy and the vibe where I thought Hime lacked.

I’m looking forward in owning the whole boxset when it becomes available here.^^

I didn’t watch yet the two Mai’s, perhaps this would be a good recommendation for those who didn’t watch yet, after all I stopped looking onto Sunrise Animation after watching OO.

Don’t like how Sunrise goes all wonky in the last 2-3 episodes?

Never seen this one but after reading your review, I will definitely go check it out sometime once I am done with my current animes.

I have to admit, I found otome-anime to be very disappointing, simply because I read the full Otome Manga before I actually went into the anime. The story was so bland compared to the depth the Manga went into and even totally moved into a more slapstick routine in many places.

Mashiro would never act like that in the Manga, for example. But, visually as usual it’s quite nice, and it has its good points.

Personally, I’m a huge huge fan and geek of the K-Sato universe. I know as much about it as the Nanoha Universe. God I’m a nerd, hah. XD

Add me to the liked-Hime, disliked-Otome group. Not that I thought Otome was bad (except the pool episode, oh lordy) and it had some good characters, it’s just that I thought Hime was a lot better and a show worth rewatching (I guess two or three times now for me) whereas Otome wasn’t anything I’d ever want to see more of…
