Anime Blog Award Nominations

April 12th, 2008

Death Sensei

I finally got around to filling out those Anime Blog Award nominations. Looking at the blogs I nominated it’s clear that it’s very AnimeNano/AnimeBlogger Antenna centric. I rarely visit anything outside of AnimeNano/Antenna since it’s pretty much where I go to find stuff to read. I think I’m going to have to plunder some blogrolls to find some others.

The most surprising thing to me was being able to nominate in 10 categories. I thought at most I’d be able to only think up nominations for more than five categories.

Editiorial Blogs

My taste leans towards how things are said when it comes to editorial blogs, rather than the subjects being discussed. The entertainment value is reading the opinion, not the opinion itself, which is probably why I rarely comment on editorial blogs even if I read quite a few of them. Even when I disagree, I rarely feel the compulsion to raise an argument. I could have added a half dozen more and not felt like I was stretching things at all.

Influential Blogs

I only nominated two blogs for this category. I don’t feel like I’ve been influenced by anyone, though I don’t doubt that I am, I’m just not aware of it. I really only see two blogs who have shown influence in a visible way over a number of blogs.

  • Danny Choo — Danny Choo does quite a bit to share his massive traffic amongst his readers who want to take advantage of that traffic. In turn, these readers point back to him.
  • Cruel Angel Theses — At least as far as the blogs listed on Nano and AB.net are concerned, Owen S has made quite an impact. The most obvious example is the Anime Blogging Collective, but it’s not just that. It feels like a certain type of blogging has gained prominence since Cruel Angel Thesis came about. Also, his persona extends beyond his own blog.

Rookie of the Year

These three all hit the ground running with interesting content.

Funniest Blog

RIUVA makes me laugh often. While Danny Choo is a juggernaut, a beast of a blog, well more than a blog at this point, it’s easy to forget that Danny has a great sense of humor that makes his posts entertaining.

Best Satire Blog

RIUVA also make me evil grin too.

Most Thought Provoking

Jeff Lawson’s abilities to get the material to connect on a personal or at least familiar level is well known and unique. In fact, I wish they sold cans of whatever he’s drinking at my nearest convenience store. Cameron Probert of In Search of Number Nine gets me to think specifically about what he’s just written. I can’t explain the why of it, but I often click back to his posts because I had a thought specifically related to it. Both seem to be able to lead me to a door, open it just a crack, and then run away so that I can’t help but look inside.

Best Blog Related Comic

Even though these are the only online comics I read, these three are often amusing enough that I’m comfortable giving each a nomination.

Best Figurine Blog

Figure blogs are the show and tell of anime blogging. It’s where people show off what they got for the oooh’s and aahh’s. Lu-k at Mukyaa has excellent lighting skills. Ron at Otadesho has taken his photo skills up several notches this year. Adun has got the biggest gemstones of any of us, though the work demon seems to have slowed his figure reviewing down.

Best Art/Doujin/Visual Novel Blog

Okay, I’m running out of steam here — this post is taking way too long to write. I think everyone in this Panera Bread arrived after me, even the people behind the counter are different. Anyway, just visit these blogs to see why I nominated them.

I hope this category grows this year, particularly where the blogger is the one who creates the art.

Thank You

To all the people who nominated my blog, thank you. I could pretend that it doesn’t make a difference, but it does. It feels good and I appreciate it.

I don’t really get into the anime blogosphere, so other than Hop Step Jump, RIUVA, Omo, and Danny Choo these blogs are all new. Thanks for the input.

(note: the following is just an opinion, not an attempt to troll)

Now, its not like I question your judgment, but what is funny about Danny Choo’s page? Personally, reading his blog has become a chore, and a necessary evil. Necessary because he does post something relevant every so and then, but evil because I find his writing rather… unfunny, and tasteless. Maybe I am just a humorless guy, but I just can’t digest his one liners, reminders of his fetishes, and bad use of internet meme speech.

I used to like his blog a lot when it was more focused on figures and gunpla.

I can see what you’re saying, VManOfMana. His blog has dipped into a lot of different things lately. Some of the crude stuff does make me laugh sometimes though. I guess, he keeps the tone light and that makes it fun for me.

Thanks for nominating my blog! It makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside! :D I agree with VManOfMana on that Danny Choo point. I too enjoyed his blog much more when it purely focussed on figures and gunpla. It’s good to see that he still does posts on that, but it seems rather rare (relatively speaking), and that I can get more concentrated news from lesser blogs. I have found that not visiting his site has been a bit more refreshing, and has let me see what other bloggers are up to.

Thanks for the nominations. I really do appreciate it. :) And I agree, I could say it doesn’t matter, but it’s nice to be on the same list as some of those guys.

I’m really honoured that you’d nominate me for such a category. Thank you for the kind words. (: Knowing that someone out there’s watching what I do and acknowledging it makes the effort all the more worthwhile, and I’m grateful for that.

Thanks for nominating my blog. Yes the work demon looms over my shoulder even on my precious weekends and I don’t think it’ll be leaving anytime soon.

Though a rather interesting list of nominations, but I also don’t see Danny Choo’s blog having much humour as compared to some other blogs.

I’d better join in the chorus of ‘thankyou’s, and it really is good to hear that you find my writing entertaining.

Speaking of which, and hopefully not causing your ego to inflate too much, what I think makes this blog particularly stand out when you write about figurines is the way you give them character. Which is actually quite creative.

    “Sankyuu” for nominating!
I have just discovered this nice project of Anime Blog Award recently, and I am afraid I did not visit much blogs to make a selection among nine categories at least. That is quite a lot :[
Will try to participate until next week though.
I must say that my range of visiting if very AnimeNano centric too, and Anime Blog Award is a really great way to discover much more nice blogs. Will dig a bit more in this way ^^
