Doujin Poll Results

February 22nd, 2008

Thanks for voting. I’m going to go ahead and put a figure photo collection together. I wanted to see if fifteen people would buy one. From the poll I think there’s a decent chance that would happen. I know a 20-page book is over-priced at $11, but for low print volumes it’s almost that much to print it. There’s a little profit built into the $11, about two bucks, so that I can hopefully use that to pay for my copy. More on it as I go along.

Count me in for one!(And include your backstories too, k?) They’re very entertaining and help to make your blog stand out.

Might be the start of something bigger!

    /r/-ing Shana in the book

I assume you want to keep it general, so no pantsu shots will be in the book. :P But if the book becomes a huge hit, I wonder if it would be an interesting endeavor.

I have no idea what’s going in it, but right now I’m looking forward to putting something together. It’s really the design and the text parts that I’m thinking over, what I should do there that could be interesting. I spent like an hour and a half going over fonts and I’m still undecided.

Luckily the subject of pretty plastic girls is already set in stone.

I’m surprised by the amount of maybe votes. Personally I think $11US for a 20 page book is cheap, given that most pages would contain your photos, but that would also depend on the printing quality. Still, I’d buy one for sure.

Funny how you’re bringing up the idea of publishing your own work as I have thought of doing the same thing this year during convention time. A few friends of mine run a n anime club table during conventions to sell stuff and I was thinking of selling some prints as posters etc. But I’ll see how things turn out.

Well I’ll order a copy and an extra one to give a friend. And also write up a tips and tricks into your doujin too on how to take photos!

Print quality is a sticking point for me. I’ll have to be happy with the print quality. This is going to be printed using a digital print press. I’ve been assured that a digital press is getting to be almost as good as traditional offset printing, but we’ll see. Most shops won’t do an offset run shorter than 250 copies, which would have required me to shell out ~$1,250+. I’d need to sell 115 copies to break even and this poll showed that very likely isn’t going to happen, but an offset run would have been sweet. I already knew that going in and just wanted to do a poll to confirm my hunches. My estimate is half of the “yes” and 10% of the maybes are going to buy.

I think some of the maybes could become buyers if the book looks like it will be good or something different than they are already getting by visiting the site. It’s tough for people to say with certainty if they can’t at least see the cover. I’m not really concerned with getting a lot of sales as I am about making a good doujin for people who’ve asked for it. The process could maybe teach me a couple of things for something else down the road.

In any case, I’ll have a couple of posts about doing this before releasing it.

Good luck with your doujin endeavors! Also, I’d totally get that if I could buy it without resorting to electronic means - I don’t have access to a credit card, so yeah >_>

  19. Seiken / VMan of Mana Says:

Well, for higher volumes, have you thought on the possibility of selling something like this in a convetion’s artist alley? Considering the sheer amount of people that go to Anime Expo and Otakon, it doesn’t sound like too bad of an idea. Its still risky, however.

Self-publishing, eh? That’s pretty amazing. In fact, I’ve never heard of/seen a figure photo doujin before, so it sounds like a pretty unique concept. I agree with Nork22; perhaps combine it with a bit of how-to techniques, and it would be awesome.

Well, here’s hoping to your success.

There are a few figure books out there, so I’m sure there’s a few doujin as well.

I thought I’d be able to do this in two weekends, but I only got the cover done. Graphic design is much much much harder than it looks.

  29. Aya Kyunik Says:

Ah, Digital press is pretty much as good as offset printing. And obviously ideal for short runs rather than long because of the less time needed for setup and cleaning (which is barely nothing on digital).

I voted maybe, as I wasn’t sure what quality of print it was going to be.

It’s funny that you put this poll up, I had an idea not so long ago about gathering some of the better photographers on the net and asking their permission to produce a compliation book, with a select few of their favourite photos along with their details such as name, URL, maybe more info individual figures or photos.

I can feel for you about the graphic pre-press element, it’s rather time consuming to do all the layouts and all the needed print proceedures (like bleed) to get something you’re happy with.

    Wow, long comment…

Good to hear that digital press is just as good then. I was worried it wouldn’t look good. This book is pretty much research into the whole process and hopefully doing something more down the road.
