Tsuruya on Valentine’s Day
February 14th, 2008
“So wait,” said Tsuruya. “You’re posting pictures of an eight inch statue on your blog for Valentine’s Day?” Tsuruya didn’t earn the nickname LOL-tan for nothing. I’d probably be laughing too if I wasn’t the one posting the pictures. Anyway, Tsuruya laughed for like five minutes, so I was able to take pictures and change backgrounds around her.

The amount of wuv that Tsuruya gets is pretty incredible given how little time she actually spends on the screen. She is hard to forget though, especially when she started to laugh like crazy during the 00 Episode. While watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, she was one of those characters I wanted to appear more often, though maybe part of the appeal was she wasn’t around enough to have unofficial SOS Brigade membership status. It makes her laughter seem more right with the world, even if she’s not right in the head.
Sometimes the mocking character routine wears thin when they spend just as much time there as everyone else. Though Tsuruya is enough of a nutjob that she belongs there.

Review of Tsuruya San from Max Factory
Tsuruya San is another Chieri sculpted (also did Mikuru) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya figurine put out by Max Factory. Tsuruya’s costume in this figure comes from the school festival episode, where her class did a cafe for their activity. Overall it’s a nice figure, certainly the friendliest looking out of the Max Factory made Haruhi figures.
She comes with optional parts: two options for a right hand, two head decorations for normal maid and along with the optional tail a cat-girl maid outfit. These days it’s an oddity that the figure does not come apart to allow skirt removal, which is double odd here since they gave Tsuruya some detailed undies. Anyway, peg base only connects on one foot, but at least unlike the built to lean out of the box MF Mikuru, Tsuruya stands straight right out of the box. Let’s hope she stays that way.

Picture Notes
I was in the mood to moderately over saturate the color on these shots. The scrapbook paper backgrounds were pretty, so I wanted to get that color. The downside when using a pattern that lines up is it’s almost impossible to get those lines to appear right without a perspective correcting lens. The Barbie partition makes a return, as well as one of the baby chicks.

Anyway, hope it’s not too redundant with the pictures. Figures where one arm sticks out can be a little difficult in trying to make each shot look different, since that limb creates such a strong line. Plus, I have a habit of concentrating on a few of the sweet angles instead of giving a 360 comprehensive of the figures, but fortunately foo-bar-baz always has that covered.

very nice photos, I like those little hearts that you put in the first pic. btw how did you get the reflection , did you use glossy type of paper ?

That looks absolutely fantastic. It’s one of those figures that I’m tempted to buy, but I just know that once I pop, I can’t stop.

She looks great, Tsuruya-san is one of those figures that i’ve been wanting but is still on the back burner of whether i’ll actually buy her or not…

-I spot Tsuruya fans.
-The paper is glossy and it’s actually white. One of the problems I had before in getting whiter BGs is the paper I was using was off-off-off-off-off-off-white, which isn’t a problem if you have enough lights. I don’t have quite enough lights to do the super blowout the background thing, so getting the whitest paper I could find helps a lot.

Nice backgrounds that tempt me to buy this Tsuruya figure, but will resist! Anyway, speaking of background, did you use wrapping paper as the background paper?

Got mine on Valentine too haha ^^;
But can’t find time to take pictures =_=
I like the 3rd photo from the end, with red bg (the same used for Pachira??)
Not taking redundant pictures is not always easy. I am definitely with you on that point.

Wrapping paper usually works well, but didn’t use any here.
White = poster board
Purple = construction paper
Red = tinsel garland still coiled in it’s packaging
Yellow stars, green plaid, and flower boxes pattern = scrapbook paper
I’ve used the red garland coil before on Yuukanalia. I try to re-use as many of these things as I can. On Pachira it was loose tinsel scattered on the table-floor.

I was up in the air whether I wanted the Max Factory or Alter Tsuruya, but eventually I got the Alter version. Still, this Tsuruya is just as cute.

That little chick on Tsuruya’s arm looks really cute lol.
Happy Valentine’s Day!

Happy V-Day! Whenever I get a nice little picture taking setup I am going straight to the paper store nearby to get some fancy backgrounds too~

Nice photos again XD
The chick on her arm was quite amusing :3
I’ve also ordered this Tsuruya (being a fan…) but seems like HLJ has some problems with my copy of her ;_;

Love the backgrounds, especially the green ones. Waiting for mine from a local dealer.

Now that Alter has announced their Mikuru, I wonder if I should have gotten the Alter Tsuruya, just because what Alter considers 1:8 scale isn’t the same as what Max Factory considers 1:8 scale. I’ve already pre-ordered the Alter Mikuru.
Scrapbook paper is a pretty cheap and comes in so many varieties. The only downside is the sheets are small and don’t come in larger sizes.

Well at least Max Factory seemed to be on time for the launch of this figure, same thing isn’t happening with Kotona Elegance which was rescheduled to March
.
For me Max Factory makes the best figures from Haruhi series but the Mikuru one was the weakest and Alter will take that spot with their Mikuru maid ^^. Tsuruya is really good on this figure the sculptor really picked her essence.

aww the one with the tiny chick is so cute ~
February 15th, 2008 at 12:18 pm
Tsuruya’s attitude definitely captured on this MF version.

I’m a big fan of Tsuruya, especially her fang ^^. But I just can’t seem to like any of the Tsuruya’s that come out lol, they just don’t look right to me. I like the first set of white background pics.

I sense heavy photoshop.
The shop I pre-ordered her from lost my record and I lost my receipt. As such, I have to fork out more money to order a new one. I am sad.
February 17th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
Ouch, loosing the order…I hope that never happens to me, Lian.
As far as the processing, there is a some Photoshop processing, but not that much in terms of actual work.

How did she get that costume in the series again? I don’t even remember - was it also Haruhi’s doing?
February 19th, 2008 at 12:18 pm
The school festival episode. Tsuruya and Mikuru’s class did a cafe and that’s the uniform.

Great pictures.
