Saber, Kiritsugu in Black

February 5th, 2008

Kiritsugu waited on the rooftop for several hours into nighttime. He kept his back against the wall, hidden from the street and out of sight from those in the building on the opposite side. Saber stood guard, but he planned not to use her. Kiritsugu had a rifle and a night vision scope. Twelve grams of lead, it was all he needed to save one hundred people from a Magus and their war. The blood on his hands would be a fair trade to Kiritsugu.

Kiritsugu seems like a more interesting character than Shiro, at least compared to how Shiro was portrayed in the Fate/Stay Night anime. In a way they are kind of similar characters. Both want to be heroes of justice, but they totally go about it in different ways. Going solely on the Wikipedia entry on Kiritsugu, Kiritsugu follows a path I think more people with a hero complex would take than Shiro. It’s tough to not even consider killing six Magus, who create a lot of death and destruction, to save humanity through world peace if one had the capability to do so. While I can understand where Shiro was coming from, as a viewer of what is basically a fighting anime, he was super freaking annoying.

Anyway, all that’s just to say I’d love to see Fate/Zero get the anime treatment. It would be interesting to see how Saber would act under a master like Kiritsugu and how he would use a servant like Saber.

Review of Saber and Kiritsugu Fate/Zero from Max Factory

The main draw for me is Saber in a suit. Her costume makes up for a pretty boring pose. The pose does capture her personality pretty well though, so I give the sculpt points on that. Saber comes with an optional hand, so she could stand with a clenched fist or holding her sword.

The other draw is that it’s a figure that is made to be paired, which in this case is Kiritsugu, Saber’s master. He’s got some John Woo trench coat action flowing on and generally looks like a bad-ass. Thankfully, while Saber is dressed in men’s clothes, Kiritsugu decided not to join in on the apparel reassignment action. Women can be attractive in men’s clothes. Men in women’s clothes, not so much. Kiritsugu also comes with right hand options to hold either a gun or cigarettes.

Picture Notes

Had to re-upload these because the .jpg color shift like totally darkened them, so if the links are pointing to the wrong shot (Flickr usually assigns a new address to a replaced shot), let me know. I should check to see if I changed anything on my laptop by accident, because the .jpg color shift is really strong on this set. Even though I upped the brightness, these shots look darker than the .psd files. Otherwise, the pictures are pretty standard. I like the shot with the lion though (edit: yikes the one I uploaded was super blurry for some reason…fixed now).

Lu-k shot his Fate/Zero pair on black, which is what I wanted to do, so did this one on white, lol.

haaaa the last one with the lion is really great indeed!
Nice reflects on the “ground” too, that’s beautiful. White gives another amazing tone…

How did you managed to make Kiritsugu stand on his own!? ^^
Slight inclination or you just placed him like that?
I couldn’t have him stand without the base, because of his coat’s weight. So couldn’t have something as awesome as the placement you give them on first picture :(

On a flat table mine doesn’t stand on his own, so a little tilting made it possible.

Nice job super rats! I love the contrast between the black-suited figures and white background.

great pictures, the white bg match the figurine black suit well :D

about the color shift, browsers don’t use the embedded color profile and use standard color table. But, even after the picture color table is converted to RGB standard, I still get slightly different color between photoshop and browser =\

The slight color shifts I’m used to, just I had to go back and +20 to +25 the brightness and +10 the contrast on all of them. >_<

Black on white nice and the reflection on the ground is cool. It would be interesting if they made Fate/Zero into an anime as well, Kiritsugu should be a more interesting character than Shiro.

Nice photos, I’m a huge fan of Kiritsugu compared to Shiro XD

ugh, i hate dealing with colour calibrations in classes. And I can understand the frustrations of adjusting the photos @_@

So I have to ask, is Fate/Stay actually any good? I’ve heard good things and bad things, and the anime looks fun, but it also looks like it could be insanely cheesy.

Cameron, that’s kind of a difficult question for me to answer. Fate/Stay Night is excellent in a lot of ways, premise, setting, character design, and how almost immediately it had me asking questions.

Unfortunately, the lead, Shiro, is one of the most irritating leads, approaching Shinji Ikari levels of annoying. In some ways probably more irritating, since with Shinji you can see where it comes from. With Shiro, the reason why he’s annoying doesn’t feel so real, making the way he refuses to act hard to be on board with. I see Shiro as the main drag, but not the only one. The other big problem is the setup seems to promise a lot that the anime didn’t fully deliver.

That said, I was entertained by it and it is a bit cheesy. The beginning is a bit talky and the overall pacing a little clumsy, leaving me a little impatient to get to the good stuff. Once it gets going there are some nice fights and twists.

I agree with the rest regarding the contrast between the white background and the black suits. Great shots!

    Saber is indeed
    too cute

    a suit

I’d've gotten Saber alone because you almost never see figures of women in suits. And she does indeed, look cute in it, but she looks much more refined and sophisticated as opposed to say, her in her armor.

Saber in a suit! I’m still waiting for my Emiya. I love my Saber in a suit! And she doesn’t look like a guy, though I wouldn’t mind if she did. I wouldn’t have gotten Emiya, but I rarely see guy figures that actually look good (and from shows I actually watch) so I had to get him. Plus, Saber would have looked so lonely by herself.

I hope someone makes a Motoko Kusanagi in a suit. Then I’d be in heaven :).

  31. super rats Says:

You kind of do have to snap up those guy figures because they are uncommon and if nobody buys them they just wont make them.

Saber looks sooooooo good in a suit - we need more “girls in suit” anime series
