With Eureka Seven it’s a broken record comment, but it’s oh so true. Each volume gets me even more pumped than before and for a different reason than before. This time what got me were the actual events of the “Big Story” moving forward with a side of LFO.

I love Gekko State, I really do. The first episode (ep 35 “Astral Apache”) on volume 9 is an all hands at battle stations thing. Everyone is on their task, whether it’s piloting the Nirvash, 606, 808, or 909, to manning a terminal on the Gekko, everyone has an important duty. Some sweet LFO action by the way. Matthew’s crucial duty is to make sure the tunes keep spinning on the turntable and feeding it out for all ears. That’s how to launch an operation! I’m with Gekko State on that bit. Not to glorify warfare or anything, just I thought it was pretty funny to see that and can understand it even if it doesn’t seem to be the most efficient thing for a member of Gekko State to be doing at that time.

Besides the sweet LFO action, episode 35 fleshes out the relationship between Holland and Dewey. They’ve always been parallel characters in many ways, but here we start to see a change in their trajectory. Holland grows more confident, while Dewey appears to unravel a bit, even if this unraveling is only temporary.

Eureka and Renton continue to be uncertain throughout the four episodes on the disc. In a way I do appreciate how E7 makes it a continuing process for the two, rather than something solved in one story arc. But, sometimes I get a little impatient when they’re on the screen and they fail to recognize the obvious. Maybe since Holland and Talho are closer to my age than Renton and Eureka I find myself a little anxious for the younger pair and disappointed that the older pair are given less priority in the story. I do find Talho more interesting with each episode and I found her extremely irritating when the show started, but that’s what makes E7 so good, the way the major characters change.

Speaking of change, the presentation of Norb sure did change a lot once he boarded the Gekko. I guess your perspective on a person changes when you see them put mayonnaise on their pizza.

Parting Shot

Volume 9 of Eureka Seven is a great balance between big ticket items as far as the overall plot and the more personal interactions with life between Renton and Eureka.
