Black Lagoon v2

Before I started watching Black Lagoon from what I heard the show was Revy, Revy, Revy, she’s so freaking awesome. After two dvds, I gotta say I think she’s a whiny coward. To make it clear, I find Revy annoying. She’s like Shinji Ikari with the way she uses self pity to excuse herself.

Black_Lagoon_groupshot_1.jpgWhat’s her redeeming feature? She’s awesome with guns. A killing machine. Big deal. She’s still a loser, hiding behind those guns. Her back story didn’t do much to make me sympathetic to her current condition at all due to the way she’s just being a Shinji about it. Plus the fact that everyone she takes out apparently is such a bad shot, they couldn’t shoot their own foot if they needed to, kind of nulls her gunfu mastery. I seriously don’t understand the erections she apparently causes.

This volume is where Rock steps up and calls Revy on her bullshit. Given how much she’s backed herself into a corner with her self pity, it’s a ballsy thing for Rock to do. Maybe he was still pumped from tea time with the nuns, but he’s going where nobody is really willing to go. I was like, you the man! Put that whack-job in her place. The scene where Rock calls her out is a great scene, because it really turns the way Revy was presented at first completely upside down. She’s not tough. She’s a coward. And it wasn’t a sudden twist either. Her front has been hinted at for a while now.

Hey, it’s still got a bit to go and I might understand later why everyone thinks Revy is so hot, but right now I find Black Lagoon interesting, but don’t see Revy as awesome. I like the other characters more than Revy, yeah even Benny — anyone who always has cold ones sunk in ice for his mates is a-ok. But, yeah, I don’t think we’re supposed to admire these characters, so it’s okay.

Now it looks like in the next volume we’ll be in for a good fight.

The only thing I like with Revy is that when she smiles, she’s scary. And yeah she’s great with guns, that’s obvious, and I’m a very good public for everything related to gunfights ^^

But she’s nothing compared to Balalaika. The Head of Hotel Moscow is definitely the character who’s impressed me the most. And for that i regret their isn’t much more explainations about Balalaika activities and motivations. I’ve heard that the manga is a bit more complet, so I should give it a try.

I liked how Black Lagoon took a sort of subversive take on its action shots. Like, they’re pretty sweet, but then sometimes they’re just really cold-blooded, and it’s like “Am I supposed to think this is cool, or disturbing?”

I hear that, Seth. Even when they’re blasting the neo-nazis…normally they make good blaster fodder in an action shot, but there was something about it that just made me pause and think that’s really cold. It’s not the reaction I’d expect when the guys we’re following are blasting away, which makes it interesting.
