No Smoking On a Paper Plane
October 30th, 2006
Once in a while, a paper master finds herself in a bind for airborn transportation and must roll out on her own airplane. Needless to say, there’s no smoking on this flight. Say hello to Yomiko, meganekko, phile of the biblio, agent on the go, special powered hero, the wood-pulp maestro. THE PAPER.

I had to psyche myself up for this pictorial. Kotobukiya figures don’t inspire the same kind of awe that the GoodSmile family of PVC does, so I didn’t go through the trouble of having more paper shoot from her hands to make it seem as though she was still building the paper plane. Anywho, this is a 1/8 scale figure sculpted by Hiroshi Inagaki.
This Yomiko could have been so much better, but as she is now she’s just alright, so recommended only as an item for ROD fans, rather than a sculpt that a fan of good figures would want to have. I’m a fan of Ms. Readman, so I like this figure in that sense, but the figure collector in me is somewhat disgusted at the wasted opportunity to kick ass.
There’s nothing “wrong” with this Yomiko figure. The pose is interesting and the base makes use of her special ability to manipulate paper. On the other hand, the detail work is not that interesting. The details are “blurry.” What I mean by that is they seem indicated rather than defined. Those aren’t clothing folds; those are lumps that approximate clothing folds. Her windswept trenchcoat could have been amazing given extra care, but here the unrefined state of the trenchcoat approximates a missed opportunity to move Yomiko to the front of the library of cool.
She’s on one leg, so will she or won’t she? Her foot is screwed into the base, which should give her extra support to combat the leaning over that PVC is prone to, especially for those living in warmer climates. However, the question of will she or won’t she lean is answered right out of the box.

It feels like they wasted a good pose. True, I’m being a bit harsh. The figure looks fine from across the room and it’s not like you’re going to be viewing them up close all the time. Even though I like having a figure of Yomiko, it’s still a mediocre figure, so doesn’t quite live up to what I was hoping it would be.

Was this the 1/8 PVC of the cold cast Yomiko figure from a while back? Anyway, I really love what you did w/ the bookshelf background; gives it a nice classy look. Looking over these pictures reminds me of how my brother would always crack up when Joker would say, “Za Peipa.” =P

As far as I know there was a cold cast version of this figure.
The book cases backdrop is actually part of the box she came in.

With the books in the background, did you take that at the public library or something? Cause I was hoping to do that for one figure but I don’t think that’ll go down well with the library staff.
Looks awesome as always.

I’m still too low level to take my figs out in public.

You need balls and steel skin to shoot your girls in public. I got used to people starring at me because i’ve been doing event shootings and filmings at location. That’s why I did had any problems when I was taking my Ignis and 10 over people were crowding around.

I was totally impressed with the bookshelve one. Until it turned out that you didn’t buy a bookshelf for her. But the first picture is the best.
