Made it out to AnimeNEXT 2009, mainly to do an anime blogging panel with Omo, Moy, and SDS. I got there around quarter to four on Saturday to do a practice run before the panel on Sunday. The aforementioned, the duo from Reverse Thieves, Brad from Japanator, Kransom from Welcome Datacomp, Scott from Anime Almanac, myself and others, hit a nearby Ruby Tuesday for dinner after the Saturday Funimation panel. Breaking bread (or endless fries) was a good time. After that, some of us hit Bad Anime Bad, which is worthwhile if watching awful anime makes you laugh.
Anyway, on top of the sad time slot for our blogging basics panel on Sunday, AnimeNEXT decided to further deter anyone from attending by changing both time and location of the panel the day of. Whatever. Panel was okay. Good thing it was a mostly friendly audience. It went okay, but I feel like I got more out of it than the handful of people who wandered in.
Other than that, I didn’t do all that much but shuffle through the dealer’s room for an hour or so to kill time. Picked up a random Kotobukiya figure that looked nice and was priced well. I also got KYMG: Yusuke Kozaki Illustrations — the character designer on Speed Grapher. I really dig the style, the neutral tones, the hint of a grotesque edge, the balance of detail and simplification. Also, bought three pins and a keychain for the charms.
My goal is to make the flap of my bag like scalemail armor with anime pins. So far I have like 25 on there (I still haven’t found an Etna pin T.T). I use this bag to lug around my laptop and doubles as my D&D bag to carry the books I’m using. So much for getting a 15.4″ screen to keep the weight reasonable. I imagine those pins are closing in on half a pound by now.

no video of the panel for those of us who couldn’t make it?
No video, but I think Omo made an audio recording, but I’m not sure how it turned out.
Great ‘holic pin! We need a full sized figure of that.
Yes! I was determined not to buy anything, but that pin got me started. A full size figure would be cool indeed.

I would like to have the back of my bag filled with anime pins. ^^
I told you I’d show up, didn’t I? XD
Thanks for being there! Were you one of the people who came in around 2?
I can’t wait to see the finished product of the scalemail bag +1.
Same here. My goal at Otakon is to make big progress on it. The bag must weigh more than the contents!
Makes me wonder if anime conventions are always so disorganized and impromptu or if the folks at AnimeNEXT2009 has something against blogging -_-
The convention I attended last weekend was a mess as well that had me shuffled from the basement to the second level and back to the basement just to get the dealer’s pass. Well, it wasn’t quite as bad this year compared to the past two years, and maybe there’s something I’m missing about the logistics of organizing such things and like every onlooker, “I can always do it better” heheh.
But all in all I had fun and if you had an okay time, I guess all isn’t lost. Hopefully you’ll be able to have a funner time the next time you get the opportunity to do another panel =)
Can never attempt something as ambitious as having a scalemail type bag, I’d most likely keep having them fall off as the collection grows and I’ll be stuck forever at some random number ^^;
I’m sure running a convention is a nightmare, especially when things are run on a volunteer basis it introduces a bit of chaos as well as experience comes and goes so sometimes lessons learned don’t make it to the next year a con runs, so “what are they thinking” moments happen every year. Not really that upset about they change, more like resigned to an “of course it happened to us” type thing.
Collecting pins is really a favorite convention activity. It’s my number one priority when I wander the dealer’s room. Figures, artbooks, everything else is a secondary, after all they don’t contribute to my bag!
A few of the pins have popped off when my dog’s leash gets caught under one and she sees a rabbit and takes off charging. Rips the pin right off the mount, as most of them are just glued on precariously.
Cant wait to see your bag in full armor ^^
It’s still not even close to armor status, but hopefully after Otakon it will have enough pins/badges.
