Akihabara soothes the otaku heart. Can you feel it? The world in Shangri-la somehow becomes a little more real when we follow Kuniko to Akihabara — damn, otaku are annoying people. There, people go about their business and obsess over silly things, not existing solely to live in the shadow of their oppressors. People don’t live to throw down evil; they live to eat barbecue, or sing karaoke, or watch stupid cartoons with loli maids. It’s kind of utopia when a person can get away with a carefree existence, even if it’s just for a little while.
I was missing that in Shangri-la. The world felt a little too contrived before, especially after getting a heavy dose of carbon trade psuedo-politics. The power loli’s also tipped the scale toward faketty-fake, at least for a westerner such as myself to who a “child god” like Mikuni is not part of their cultural history. What we got a bit of now is what some of the characters would be like if there wasn’t this story they’d been drafted into being in. That’s given me enough to suspend my objections to unlikely, but plot convenient developments, regarding a heavy-set tranny and a scary loli. The buff tranny, Momoko, has gotten a sweet make-over into a serious butt-kicker, which makes her more believable as Kuniko’s guardian.
Kuniko herself is starting to grow on me. What was particularly endearing was when she said she saw hope after seeing Atlas, but didn’t know what she should do about it. With that, I found a reason to stick with Shangri-la for a little while longer.
I didn’t see Akihabara yet, I’m not that far I think, but what really disturbes me, is the seeming “politics” all about carbon. That’s unrealistic, and I’m not talking about the world-ruling loli.
They get away from it for a little while (thankfully). I do find it interesting, not in the story itself, but I’m interested to see like what side the show takes.
I have no clue what side the show is going to take, and I like that very much.
I really enjoyed the otaku pleasure at a real girl wearing a real school uniform. It’s another one of those flirtations with the fourth wall that this show keeps dropping in at random — like the repeated non-panty-shots of cartwheeling Kuniko (from Strike Witching Gonzo!).
The Internet needs to cough up some more Shangri-la images though. We’re all recycling the same one for our blog posts.
So true, I haven’t even seen more than a handful of fan works either. Unless we break down and use screencaps, we’re screwed as far as post header images go.^^

To be honest though, well I do like the new design, just a bit. But I still liked your old Banner the most. Without-that It’s like, playing Guitar with a string missing…. Some how, things just don’t seem right, no-mater how many times you strum that E cord.

I’m also very glad to see the turn of events with two episodes in Akihabara now. Shangri-La seems to be heading in a good direction and hopefully it’ll keep up that way. I’m enjoying watching it every week so far ^^
