The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a good movie. It takes two familiar territories, high school romance and time travel, keeps them both close to home, and comes out with a story that held my attention quite well through the characters. Really with how much stuff we see these days and how we’ve gone through more stories and plots in a year than people in previous generations went through in a lifetime, we’ve seen every plot twist multiple times, so I look away from plot for uniqueness and toward the experience of the characters and I felt I got that.

For those who prefer, a subtitled Japanese Trailer.
One of the things about the high school life and romance angle in this story is that there’s enough idealism and wish in it to make it feel real, that whole sense you’d be with your friends forever. God I miss those days where everyone who mattered was always there. I leapt through time watching this.
There’s a magic in the slices here that I’m having trouble saying. I mean, this is just amounting to a long winded, I really, really liked it. I guess there’s a sense of not wanting to poke it too much, do no harm.
Ocean handled the dubbing. I’m not generally a fan of Ocean dubs, but I definitely enjoyed their work here. The tone fit just right. It was more in line in tone with how Disney dubbed the Ghibli movies than the usual tone used in dubs of the standard otaku anime. I would assume the goodness came about from actually having some sort of budget to dub it. The standout in the cast was Andrew Francis as Chiaki.
Yeah, I definitely agree that of what I was able to hear of the English vocal cast, Chiaki was the most appropriate sounding. Never been a fan of dubs in any language, though, so I’m probably not the best judge.
Tokikake was indeed a great movie, other than just bringing you back, it was trying to show us the importance of not abusing any special powers or techniques, and to cherish people because you never know when they will be gone.
It was quite a good movie indeed, and it probably hit me more than 5cm did, to be honest. I’ve had the good fortune to see it in 35mm, but I was horribly sick at the time, so I unfortunately was not able to appreciate it as well as I could have.
Thank you for sharing this, I will definitely watch this one now!
Tokikake hit me in a different way than 5cm did. Tokikake reminded me more about the fond memories of the past, while 5cm hit me in the present.
I’ve really gotta watch this one back some time, along with 5cm, because I know I loved both movies. It’s a great romance, but it’s also so much more than that.
I have never seen the dub version, but this movie is one of my new favorites, very well done. Now I want to see the dub XD I’m going to add you to my blogroll now too, I don’t know why I didn’t before.
Nice review. Have been considering giving this one a look, so the review definitely helps.
I find it interesting how others also pair up this movie with ’5cm Per Second’ as it really reminded me of it when I was watching. It’s equally interesting that this is somewhat reflected in sales as well. Amazon Japan published their 2008 sales list of top 10 Anime, and as far as Blu-Ray sales ‘Time’ was ranked 4th with ’5cm’ right behind it at 5th.
Personally I love both movies but ’5cm’ still holds the top spot, though I didn’t like the ending compared to ‘Time’.
The dub was amazing and Makoto’s voice matched up to her personality, I thought. There was one instance where the flaps and voice weren’t coordinated (one of the conversations between Makoto and her Aunt) but it was acceptable.
I would have liked to see more of a romantic connection especially near the ending, then again that’s just the hopeless romantic in me talking.
I watched this movie quite some time ago
LOVED it from the beginning to the end. For only my personal taste, I liked it better than ’5cm’ maybe when I watched ’5cm’ I was bit tired… so I should try to watch it again ..haha
Yeah, it is interesting that people compare this with 5cm, though it never even crossed my mind to do so. Maybe it’s a quality thing.
I’m not a fan of Ocean dubs, at all. i really hope they really did do a good job with this film.
Ah, this movie was sooo good!!!!!
It was enjoyable and I’m still rewatching it when I have time…
Great movie i cld say.
Carries around some important themes to the future and present (:
So it is a Ghibli movie? I stayed at the anime section of a local media shop and looked at the movie which standed near Howl’s Moving Castle, but didn’t know whether it is Miyazaki’s movie or not.
The animation is done by Madhouse. Now, I don’t know all of the other companies involved, but I don’t think Ghibli is one of them. You should give it a try though. Judging from the comments, a lot of people think it’s very good.
I’ve heard a lot of people liked this movie. Gonna have to check this one out for sure when I get the chance.
I LOVED that movie a lot !
The story is really nice and i’m going to watch it again just for one scene ^^
One thing that impressed me about the movie is how they are able to make use of cliche, overused storylines (time traveling etc) and be able to turn it into something original. The drama scenes, too, are “been there done that” concepts, but they manage to still make it captivating
