Wendy Garret is one of the main characters in the GunxSword anime. As far as I can tell from watching the first volume of the anime, she’s a naive, but headstrong girl that has gotten herself way over her head. This Bubba sculpted, Max Factory produced, Wendy looks good both in terms of quality and overall cute factor.
Wendy kneels on the giant suitcase that she always lugs around (which is kind of funny in the show), wiping some sweat from her forhead with the back of her arm. Having that suitcase as the base is a great use of a character element, but a very minor drawback is she’s glued to it. I wonder what they hell she keeps in there?
One of the reasons I decided to pick this up was the pose. Most figures keep the characters in a standing pose, but the kneeling pose Bubba gave Wendy in this sculpt changes things up a little. She looks pretty good from different angles, but the figure definitely looks best turned to where she’s looking at you over her shoulder (you can see her from different angles if you view the slideshow).
Likeness is something I tend to give a bit of leeway, so long as the spirit of the character comes through. Wendy’s face feels a little more curved here than it does in the anime. Her features in the animation feel a little flatter than they are here, but stuff like that tends to happen. Bubba’s sculpt misses some of the earnest naivetee of the animated Wendy and looks a year or two older, so the likeness just falls slightly short to me, but I’ve only seen four episodes so this might be something that’s totally Wendy Garret for all I know. What’s nice about the facial expression is her mouth doesn’t have the standard open-D like you see on way too many figures.
When looked at from a low angle, her hair tends to helmet-out a little. A little more texture around the hairline might have helped prevent that from happening.
But from behind, there is a good amount of hair detail.
The overall detail level and build quality is standard Max Factory, which is to say it’s good. The blush and shading on her skin is fairly subtle and not overdone — while there is some shading, for the most part there’s enough definition in the actual sculpt to allow shadows and highlights to form naturally. and her eyes look great. Her shoes have a decent amount of detail, showing the grooves of the different pieces. As well, the holster shows stitching details and has texture to differentiate it from her clothing. On my particular figure, the mold line on her left side can be seen, especially when looking at the 1200×1600 picture.
If you’re a fan of GunxSword, then this is a good pickup. This is the more interesting of the two Wendy Garret figures I have seen in person (the other being the Yamato SIF). So that she doesn’t get lonely, I’m definitely picking up Van when he comes out, but I’m still undecided on getting any of the Carmen 99 figures.
Next up will either be Gunslinger Girl Henrietta from GSC or the Black Dress Saber from Alter, which arrived as I wrote this. I think I went a while without getting any figures I wanted, but with delays and stuff a whole bunch shipped within a two week period.

[...] In the end, with this being my first Max Factory purchase, I’m pretty satisfied. For a review, check out DannyChoo and HappySoda. [...]
