Sculptor Hiromitsu Morikawa posed Flonne like she’s turning around to see who called her and is waving hello — I guess it depends on you if you think she’s waving hello or goodbye, but it’s Flonne so I’m going to assume it’s a hello. The way she is twisted is a little extreme and I would probably injure myself trying to imitate it, but anime and videogame characters are flexible, right? The pose is light and sweet and fits the character, so that’s not a big problem. For a turnaround of the figure, click on the slideshow link.
When getting figures of characters I know, I tend worry that the figure won’t look much like the character. The likeness of this figure is pretty good. The artist definitely captured Flonne’s sweetness and awkwarness with the pose. As far as the face goes, Flonne’s almost psychotic happiness comes through alright. What’s missing are some of the angular lines of the character design illustrations, but I imagine those angles just don’t translate from 2d to 3d very well, so the facial stucture differs somewhat, being a little rounder than the illustrations.
The figure is pretty heavy for a 1/8 scale figure, especially for someone as skinny as Flonne, but one thing to note is Flonne has a lot of hair. Actually, if this were the first angle you saw the figure from, it almost looks like a female Cousin It from the Addam’s Family. Hopefully, the legs will provide enough support to prevent some leaning from happening down the road.
The paint and build quality of this Flonne figure is better than the other two Kotobukiya figures I own. The ruffles on her outfit are done very well, as are the simplified clothing folds, giving her outfit a soft airy drape. The paint application is neat. Colors stay in their area, like the blue ribbons don’t spill over into the white area. If you click on one of the links to a larger version of the image below, you can see that there’s an average number of nits, bubbles, and specks in the PVC. You can also see in some of the pics that the shading behind Flonne’s knees is a bit pronounced.
Her shoes are plain and the base is just a regular white plastic disc.
Overall, Kotobukiya’s release of Flonne is a decent one for fans of the game or anime. It represents the character very well. It does have that silly looking angle from behind, but when she’s turned toward you waving hello with her hair and clothing swishing around, it’s a pleasant looking figure.
ADDED July 30, 2006:
I knew I should have put up a shot of this Koto Flonne next to the Etna released by Max Factory. The difference in scale is apparent. I am much more of an Etna fan than I am a Flonne fan, so I don’t mind that Etna is larger than Flonne, but it would have been nice if they were the same scale. Now here’s a hope that either company finishes the pair, or better yet add Laharl and make the trio complete.
