For about a week now I’ve been torturing everyone I know with my awful singing. I can’t help it. I got the Nerima Daikon Brothers set and watched the whole thing in a couple of days. That kind of concentrated exposure has some serious effects, causing me to involuntarily sing about a fluffy panda for unknown reasons. It’s not unlike the condition programming barrage that the guy in A Clockwork Orange goes through. Fortunately for those nearby, this type of thing is temporary.
Nerima Daikon Brothers is an anime musical. Yeah, I know. Musicals are a tough sell for me too. The first inclination is to avoid at all costs. I’ve seen just about every Tim Burton movie that I know of and yet I can’t bring myself to watch Sweeney Todd. Not because of the gore, but because it’s a musical. Maybe I burned out on them after seeing one too many high school productions of Oklahoma and seeing Oliver about fifty times since that was on permanent loop at HBO when I was a kid.
One of the things that NDB had going for it was the Nabeshin factor, so there’s always the promise of serious amusement. Nabeshin humor for me is either a home run or a strike-out most of the time. Fortunately, Nabeshin packs a lot into his shows so another batter is up quickly if the previous one strikes-out. Just being a musical adds a level of bizarre to it that’s entertaining (I know that seems contradictory with the previous paragraph). Even when it’s not making me laugh out loud, it’s making me laugh on the inside, where it counts.
The animation is pretty cheap looking, recycled quite a bit, but also quite effective for what’s going on in the show, so I wouldn’t dock it any points for that. I thought the English version was pretty well done as far as being an amusing musical comedy goes. Of course there’s the usual thing about humor often times is language and cultural specific, but it seems making fun of the King of Pop transcends geography.

Seriously though, I haven’t even heard of this series at all until you mentioned it. Again, probably flew under the radar for me. The fact that it’s a musical probably didn’t help much at all in that light either, since I really don’t like musicals at all.
Girl on the cover has a nice …angle… though. :3
Oliver rocks, yo! And Sweeny Todd isn’t that great. I wanted to love it, but I just couldn’t. All in all I love musicals. Like anything, you’ve got great ones, okay ones, and nails on chalk board ones. They’re generally cheesy, but I like cheese

Theres nothing better than a Random Comedy Series with a bit of Singing and Dancing^^
I especially love how Nabeshin isnerts himself into the Animes.Too Bad i was only able to see the first ep of NDB.I watched it in Japanese and loved it.

Oliva and Oklahoma are probably the worst examples of musicals. Go see something like Miss Saigon or blood brothers!! Haha. The anime musical sounds very interesting, especially the bit about a fluffy panda..
