Some of you regulars probably know about the figure photo book I’m putting together.
I’ve got this picture in my head of how I want it to look and what I wanted it to be. Sitting here at my computer trying to put it all together, it’s amazing how far away that image is from the reality of what I can actually do. Knowing is so different from doing. It’s another language.
Here’s a cover I might go with and a possible name for it being “PolyVinyl Chloride”. It’s a bit more humble than I originally hoped. For this one I’ll keep it a collection of pictures, a note or two, and include another thing about lighting.
It’s halfway done, I think. Some of the pictures need a touch up to remove dust flecks from the figure and stuff like that. I am having fun with it, even if it is taking forever.
Definitely use that image (or one similar) for your cover.. the eye contact’s alluring and makes me want to see more.
The format’s interesting. Almost square.
(Hmm, might be easy to convert into a calendar.)
About the title.. a bit, erm, industrial?
PolyVinyl Choride to..
.. P.C. ? (as in: ‘C.C.’ from Geass)
.. Polly/Poly ?
.. Cold Cast ?
Actually, ‘Poly’ would be understood by those in the know, and might be intriguing for those who aren’t.
Regardless, count me as a customer!
hoah you made yuukanaria the cover
my most favorite photo
will be great if you include the lighting tutorial as well in the book ^_^
You accept shipping to Philippines?
woo~!
Cover looking nice, reminds me of Range’s books for some reason. I’m really liking out this is turning out, hell, it’s making me feel like I should start something like this as well.
Great work, looking forward to the finished product!
Looks great. That pic of yours got me to buy yuukalania.
I think the name “Vinyl” alone sounds nicer than PolyVinyl Chloride ^^; , also your cover photo is great. fits very well with “vinyl” , any theme for this book?
Thanks for the feedback.
Originally, I wanted to do something heavier with decorative elements. It started to come out sloppy looking, so obviously my skills weren’t up to making it presentable.
Minimalism is forgiving in the sense that things will tend to look boring instead of AWFUL when the person doing the design ain’t so great.
The first concept was to put the white portion on the bottom, to look like a Polaroid instant picture, but I found putting the title down there drew my eye to the title rather than to the photo, which is where I want the eye to focus. I think title on the top is something we’re used to, making it easier for the eye to ignore since it’s in an expected spot. An unconventional location draws attention to that location. Plus, scrapping the Polaroid idea makes the cover full bleed.
I’ll have more information on distribution when I decide on which service to use.
I like the current look of the photobook. It’s simple and simple is good! And it presents a really clean too ^^
Put me down for 2 copies when you are done.
Taking your time is no issue as you’ll be glad that you spent the extra time getting it to how you want. If you quick slapped it together and find out at the end it’s not what you want, then you’d be kicking yourself.
Either way, definitely looking forward to the release.
I’m definitely interested in getting a copy, but like samejima, I need to get it shipped to the Philippines, and even then, I have no real way of paying unless I get a middleman here.
You know, I kind of like the Polaroid layout idea. I think it might work with a different portrait perhaps? The other thing that might give it more of that Polaroid look is if the title was handwritten as if it had been done in magic marker or something… The notion just popped into my head as I read the comments…
But whatever the case, I’m looking forward to it!
looking great so far. you’ve pique my interest to get myself a copy or two.
Yuukanaria is an awesome choice to grace the front cover.
One picture, pure and simple. Sometimes the simplest things are the best, good choice for the cover. The important thing is that you’re having fun while making it. Putting a tutorial about lighting on it is definitely a must.
The name of the book was ingenious because it inspires creativity even with the simplest thing.
Have any idea of how many pages it has?
somehow it sounds more like a chemistry book…
how much would it cost?
I’m excited about this book. ^_^
I eagerly await this book!
Keep us updated
Looks great so far! I think the quality of your pictures is so strong a minimalistic layout actually works well. Looking forward to its completion, would love to get a copy ^^
I’ll tell you guys about number of pages, price, and when/where and all that kind of stuff when I know. I’m not even sure yet, since in part it will depend on the printing service I go with.
The cover’s very similar to the Range Murata’s Robot, but it just seems to work. I also thought that your photo: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2180/1515377888_f13bb5b260_b.jpg would make for an awesome cover – the red really makes it stand out, while the whole image has that play between imagination and reality.
Could be just me, though.
I might move the title area back to the bottom or change the cover design. I was afraid this would be too similar.
Hey, Super Rats, have you ever considered writing a tutorial on how you get the effects you do? What kind of equipment you use and such? Or even take shots of your setup that you used during the photo shoot? I’m not sure if you ever did in a previous post, but I’m sure there are people like myself that would like to get figure-shooting but are having a difficult time getting that kick ass effect you manage to land with your shots.
I mean, seriously you have this spectactular talent and ability to capture artistic ( and at times ecchi :3 ) angles that I’d like to try and learn.
Do you think you’d be able to share your knoweldge with us?
I actually have the same thought of doing something similar, even have part of it done in PDF. Problem is the cost of printing it is, well costly, so it’s currently KIV at the moment. The cover looks good btw ^^
I like the cover. It’s simple yet striking.
I’m very interested in buying it when it comes out…make it affordable~ ^_^
Post Vinyl Collection?
That makes no sense, but I think it sounds nice.
It does look like a Range Murata book, as some have stated.
The title is fine, I think. However, I would make the image “wide-screen” instead of square. You can cut off a bit of the shoulder and make the composition focus more on the eyes, and drop the image a bit lower to frame it. Rule of thirds man.

“Figure ReViews” ?
