I’m done with Google Adsense. Adsense was on HappySoda for five months and pulled in $68 or about $13 a month. Not great, but it was $68 I didn’t have. It was actually doing better each month I had it and making enough to import a figure every six months looked sweet enough. Performance is not the reason I’m dumping Adsense.
Over the past several weeks the number of anime download sites charging for fansubs and/or dvd rips that were showing up in Adsense bugged me (not to mention ads for stores selling bootleg dvds). Filtering them out was just starting to take too much time and the filters wouldn’t apply for several hours. Hell if I touch any of that money. So yeah, I let Google advertise five months for free basically (payout is after $100 is made), but I’d rather not continue.
On the plus side, removing the Adsense cleans up the page. I don’t get enough traffic to sell my own adspace, so HappySoda is likely going to stay ad free.
Bah I don’t have adsense after a stupid prank by one of my then-colleagues who used my army’s secured internet to click on my ads more than a few hundred times in a row. Then adsense claimed I abused the service and banned me.
I calculated about 1000 or so in lost income thanks to him.
Yeah, I understand what you feel.
I’ll experiment Google Adsense a little bit longer, since it’s starting to display accurate ads according to mukyaa~’s content (and also because I haven’t reached that amont of money yet ^^)
But I admit sometimes there are ads that have nothing to do there, and it’s not that simple to filter them ;_;
Nevertheless, 13$ is quite good. I’d like to earn so much, then it would at least pay the site hosting each year.
But I assume it isn’t really useful if you want to buy figures with that… hehe ^^
Interesting. I only seemed to ever get those Full Metal Alchemist ads and the DO NOT CLICK IF YOU ARE UNDER 18 ones.
Despite the temptation of money, I hate ads so much that it would feel hypocritical to ever have any.
$1000, that’s some serious cash, tj.
lu-k, I found that with the intros I like to write on the figure reviews it would confuse Adsense.
I never got the DO NOT CLICK IF YOU ARE UNDER 18 ad, as far as I’ve seen, but Adsense did love FMA, Ninja Nonsense, and Witchblade. I didn’t really pay that much attention to what was being advertised until about a month ago when I noticed ads for bootlegs.
Karura, I hear that. The lure of money did get me though. I haven’t given up on ads if I think they’re for something good, just I’ve given up on the adsense type ad programs which use my blog to promote stuff I can’t stand.
Yeah I noticed this kind of confusion too, on some of my pages because of the title I give sometimes :/
Maybe you should try some affiliate programs with online shops like amazon, j-list, play-asia etc…
Well, for the little experience I have with play-asia, this I far less interresting than google ads talking of money, but at least you can have a full control on it.
super rats, first of all – kudos for all the lovely pix! Verry nice. (And your ‘back stories’ provide a second reason to smile).
^_^
As your talking about income have you considered selling sets of your pix instead of seeking ad revenue?
Someone said a while back you could publish a book of them (at least to the Japanese market). You probably could! I tried something like that once – WisconsinArts.com. Wouldn’t do it again though (too risky). But I have an idea…
Huh, never noticed adsense on your blog, most likely because of the pop-up blockers I had installed on my firefox browser. I am tempted by adsense myself, I have an account already, but I keep saying no to myself and forget about it. Though having that extra income means more figures I could buy myself lol.
Since your blog is very product related you also might want to try auctionads. I found myself more interested in product ads with pictures than text only ads that were provided by adsense.
One huge drawback that auctionads has is that making money through it is very very hard, since you only see the $$’s if someone actually takes action on ebay.
Fanservice, a book or a calendar would be fun. I keep saying that someday I’ll do it.
I believe that half of the clicks on my Adsense were from people who don’t read English and couldn’t tell they were clicking on an ad. My best Adsense days usually coincided with whenever a Japanese language blog or message board linked to me. This would cause my overall traffic to spike 20% or more, but my Adsense click through rate would quadruple (a whole 12 clicks vs. 3 clicks). I have no way of confirming if the Japanese visitors were the ones clicking on the ads, but it was a pretty consistent the way it happened. I think this is why text ads do better than image ads as far as clicks go. Some people don’t realize that they are ads.
I’m not so worried about generating revenue at this point. I think I would need an actual product or significantly more traffic to generate enough to make it worthwhile. And I’m just kind of thinking as I type…
I think the site looks better like this… despite the ads generating revenue for you…
Anyway, I think you’re making a really honorable stand against selling fansubs by getting rid of adsense.
What the hack is google thinking by advertising fansubs? It’s not fair for the subbers.
On a side note, are you getting Maxfactory Tsuruya and the Alter Louise with the black bustier dress? They are pretty nice looking figures, which I can hardly wait for. I noticed you added Nadie to your list on the bottom of this page… Nadie is a very good one too, but I haven’t seen Cazador to get “attached” to the character.
So many figures and stuff, but no money… @_@
Quite a pretty nice earning. Since I started my new domain in may I earned about 40 bucks since. Like lu-k, I just want to pay for the web hosting.
Wow~
I was actually thinking of getting adsense but I didn’t feel like my user base was large enough, that and I didn’t like how they look anyway ^^;
Great stand you’re doing, if it was taking too much effort to filter out the crap then it was prolly the best idea to leave the whole thing~
I didn’t mean for it to come across like I’m taking a stand, but thanks for the thumbs up.
I can’t decide between the MaxFac or the Alter Tsuruya. The MaxFac one should at least be the same scale as the others. Alter and MF have a slightly different idea of what is 1/8, but I kind of like the Alter one more. It’s kind of strange that Alter’s only Haruhi figure is Tsuruya.
In my opinion, Adsense really doesn’t make much sense unless you know there are a lot of people that pass through.
Very nice information. Thanks for this.
