Watching Beck, My Fingers Hurt

I’ve watched the first volume of Beck like five or six times already. It’s great, like two turn-tables and a microphone of goodness. I’m so into the show, I pulled out my acoustic guitar from its super dusty guitar case, that’s all but a neglected apartment decoration now, and tried to see how much I remembered (mind you I was never that good, more of a drummer than a guitar guy, but apartment complexes don’t take kindly to drum kits). Man, do my finger tips hurt. I’ve lost just about all of the hand strength I had when I used to play and can barely hold the chords on an acoustic for three or four minutes at a time before needing to rest and get some blood flowing back in my left hand.

I’m loving every second of the pain involved with relearning those chords and building muscle memory. It’s been three days now. There are some chord progressions and passes that are coming back to my fingers, but it’s anything but smooth. I’ll never be a rock star, that’s for sure. I’m almost smack dab in the middle of where Koyuki is trying to find his way and Saito the aging bachelor trying to survive and get a stinking parrot to sing along. In my case it’s a dog instead of a parrot, and I’ve got a good 10-15 years before I go Saito full mode. What a scary place to be!

Pretty much no matter what happens, there’s a stretch where you’re going to have to work your ass off, might as well be for something sweet, no? There’s always going to be office jobs. We can’t all be rockstars, but at least be the guy or gal who took a shot before landing in a cubicle. Swing the bat Takkun! Man, I can’t believe I went there.

So yeah, Beck. It’s great. The box it came in is pretty cool too, made to look like an amp. Funimation has been doing some good stuff with a few of their collector’s boxes. Someone there is having fun and I’m enjoying it too, probably too much. I went to music store yesterday and just oogled the guitars. I always wanted a semi-hollow body. Lucky for my neighboors my figure habit means I can’t afford an electric and an amp.

The only guitar I can “play” is the Guitare Hero pad hahaha ^^; (I’m actually a trombonist in a jazz band)
But yeah, Beck rocks! It really gives you the desire to scratch some strings and play deep riffs :D

Yeah I loved Beck. I was in the guitar club back in school. Such an awesome show.

Wow, this box looks so good!

Unfortunately most people I know have dumped the anime because of huge disappointment. (Especially because Beck would have needed Suzumiya Haruhi’s animation quality to bring forth the mood of great music.)

Beck ftw! Totally can relate with how the show can inspire you to dust off the acoustic, made me do the same as well ;)

    I just couldn’t live without my guitar…
I took guitar lessons for 12 years and even if it’s been some month I left my guitar alone (because of my job, the blog and all that) I can still play virtually anything (except some very tricky Steve Vai lines)…..
    :D

Glad to hear you’re coming back to the guitar land Mr Super. The semi hollow guitars sounds nicely and you can almost use it without an amp (but it’s even better with a nice vintage fender lamp amplifier)

That box looks awesome. I bought mine online but unfortunately had to cancel since I’m going for vacation next weekend and won’t be here to accept it. (It was on backorder at DVDPlanet). Maybe after vacation I’ll order it again if they’re not OOP already (like the Trinity Blood box!).

Anyways, I’ve been meaning to pick up the guitar myself. My parents want me to play so I can play at church, but I honestly can’t see that happening. I have no musical rhythm what so ever. At least none that could be exploited and turned into a talent.

Good luck with future endeavors with the guitar! Practice makes perfect.

Beck has one of the best and most appropriate art boxes around.
I still havent picked mine up yet though :O
I have no music talent in my body so I can just enjoy the anime without being seduced by the idea of a career in the music industry.

*OT* Have you seen/heard of When They Cry? It’s my current anime obsession so I just had to throw it out there. Sorry :p

Wasn’t there a Beck DVD release that had a figure of Koyuki and Lucille together?

  9. coeli

I know.. Ah my mistake though, it’s not on a DVD package but the figure is included in Beck’s Vol. 26 manga..
