Like you said though, it's probably not his strongest work. The surrealism in it was interesting, and as dreaming goes, suits it well enough. The retelling of his stories though, this definitely is common practice. Miyazaki does it constantly too. I do remember watching one of his older ones - Perfect Blue. Now that was an interesting psychological thriller at the time. I've yet to watch Tokyo Godfathers and Millennium Actress, even though I won the DVDs.
