Hello again. Time for plastic and jpegs. This go around it’s Yagyu Jubei from Alter and Hobby Japan, the first in the Hyakka Ryoran series, featuring a quartet of legendary warriors turned girly by Nitro+. Jubei is a standard release figure, but some of the others in the series are Hobby Japan exclusives. Nitro+ designs usually translate very well into figure form, so I’ve been looking forward to these figures.
The individual design elements are appealing. Her swords mounted on rope belts around her thighs are ridiculous, but they look great. A skirt would just get in the way, so Jubei’s smart not to wear one. Function should win over modesty in these situations, after all.
The sculpt, by Mirano, emphasizes triangles to keep the eye looking over the figure. The wide hips are a triangle pointing up and the neckline of her shirt a triangle pointing down, where the two points meet in between her breasts. There’s a couple other natural triangle patterns that have been emphasized and put to good use, which helps give the figure a good visual flow overall.
While I love the decent sized hips, full size boobs, and the face/eye design, Jubei looks slightly off in her proportions. It could be the chunky shoes elongating her legs that’s throwing me off, but her torso feels a touch compact. Also, from some angles the placement of her neck/head gets thrown off by the drum on her back.
I had a good impression of the figure when I took it out of the box. Although, there are a couple of things that dampened the sweetness, I still have a favorable view of the figure after a longer look. It looks like Foobarbaz, gave Jubei 3 out of 5 stars, which I could see, but I think I like it a little better than that. Could just be that I like the designs and it’s tilting me a little.
Back when this figure line was announced I was pretty hot for it but when I heard that some were Hobby Search Exclusives I decided against ordering her.
I do know me and I would want a complete set and that would prove rather expensive.Besides that I dont like all the designs.
Shes got a nice pose but I actually prefer the exclusive swimsuit pose (yes im a perv.) but sadly the execution of that isnt very good.

Yeah, I’m still debating getting Hattori Hanzo (the girl with the glasses). Of the four, it’s my least favorite by far, but I like the other three quite a bit. Characters designed like her are usually one of the maddeningly permissive type characters who is strong enough to let people take advantage of her and that’s kind of irritating.
The red things are dried plants dyed red.

I actually dislike her for the exact same reasons you mentioned.Im not a fan of those character types either and im already spending too much cash in plastic chicks.Ill be interested to check them out on your blog though.

Any chance you will try to have a crack in getting the exclusive swimsuit version? I really prefer the overall design of that one but after recently finding out it’s only limited to 1500 pieces, it’s gonna be a lot harder than just ur average exclusive.
Maybe it’s just me, but I find her swimsuit version is really hot. The sword in-between her boobs.

Even though some peeps are saying it looks sloppy and all, I still kind of want to get the swimsuit version, but it’ll probably too much trouble to get.
Swim suitver and this version are extraordinary good!! No doubt the designer put a lot of effort in her.

It’s got everything going for her except for the base in my honest opinion. I can see where you’re going with the torso being too compact, but I’m not one to tell when I don’t have the real deal.
Lovely figure. I didn’t know she was a Nitro+ design as well.
Now that I’m looking at this, I don’t know why I didn’t buy it.
You still take absolutely amazing photos. I don’t know if I’ve asked you this before, but what lens are you using for your close ups? I can’t get nearly as good detailed close ups as you can. Is it my lighting? Are you cropping?
I just got mine today and I love her. I guess that’s because her outfit and overall character design is overwhelmingly appealing to me. Girls with katana is one of my soft spot. And I was also surprised by Foobarbaz’s 3 star rating. She is almost perfect for me. ^^”
For me, I gladly dive into the hyakka ryoran figures knowing some of them are going to be exclusives. And I am hopeless when it come to completing figures from the same series. *sigh* …good thing that I like all the character designs so far. :p
From the pictures it looks like they have some very smart design points, like you said.
But I actually don’t like her pose! It distorts her torso and upper body too much

I cancelled my order to get more nendoroids and all these reviews on Jubei just eggs me on that decision ^^

Well this figure is fully geared up. It’s nice to see figures with gears a bit different than the usual swords and armors. When I saw her name the first thing that came in mind was Onimusha 2 and thought “what the heck jubei was a guy”. I think the strong point besides the body shapes is her facial expression, not quite plane but has some sort of mystic in her smile.
Good catch, the expression on her face does have a mystique. A lot of figures have the same expression, that silly open D mouth.

Great shots as always ^^ Was surprised that foo gave her 3/5. I think she is not that bad, and most of minor details is hard to spot compared to zoom on photos ^^
I was in lobe with the figure, since I first saw the artwork ^^ Long time till they finally released but I love it.
The only thing I can complain about is her right hand ^^ Noticed that not so long ago. When you check up on bracer and pose of her wrist… Mirano messed that one imho ^^;

Its a very nice figure and I like the colors and so on, but I didn’t order her because of the big knop at her back.
Amazing photography as always. The only thing stopping me from getting her right now is a tremendous lack of funds. I considered getting her, but I figured “pre-orders are still open practically everywhere” and then BAM! … Overnight, almost every place sold out; those that didn’t, jacked up the price.
I can’t wait to get some pimp figures like this >.> I SOOO need to move to AnnArbor where the anime’s at. I’m in the middle of no-where and can’t do crap about it…..
